"Redneck" David Mundell: "I want to be a champion in both BKFC and the UFC"
“Redneck” David Mundell will headline the February 15, Bare Knuckle FC 10 pay-per-view fight card…… a card in which he says he wasn’t even scheduled to be on just a few weeks ago.
An unfortunate leg injury forced the originally scheduled Joe “Diesel” Riggs to withdraw from the BKFC 10 bout against promotional newcomer Hector Lombard.
Hours later, Mundell said he received a call and the opportunity that he didn’t even think to pass up.
“I just got married in November,” Mundell said. “I was taking time off, just enjoying life. I got the call, and I couldn’t say no. I said right away.”
With two bare knuckle fights under his belt, and only three minutes and four seconds of fight time between both, Mundell is a fighter that even a highly touted MMA legend like Lombard needs to be concerned about.
“I like it… I just like fighting,” Mundell said of his success inside the squared circle.
“I focus a lot on boxing, even in MMA. If you hit somebody hard, they like to take you down in MMA. They don’t like it,” he said.
Mundell’s first outing with BKFC took place at the promotion’s sixth event, arguably their biggest card to date. Headlined by a grudge match between Artem Lobov and boxing sensation Paulie Malignaggi, BKFC 6 featured a fight between Mundell and Drew Lipton. At 1:55 into the contest, Mundell has finished his opponent, and his bare knuckle career was off to a start that nobody had expected.
“Redneck” came to the sport of bare knuckle with a 10-5 record in mixed martial arts. He fought for promotions such as Bellator, Titan FC, CFFC, and M1, but it seems that bare knuckle is growing on him.
“I like fighting, obviously,” Mundell said. “The exposure behind bare knuckle is amazing, it is growing so fast, and I just want to be a part of it.”
Mundell would return at BKFC 8 where it took just 1:09 for him to finish Ronnie Forney at the Florida State Fairgrounds.
With his biggest challenge ahead of him, Mundell is setting goals that some might say are unattainable, but when you have the focus that this 28-year old fighters has, the sky is the limit.
“I want to get into the UFC,” Mundell said. “I know that is a weird thing to say when I am headlining a BKFC card, but if you are asking me for a goal, I want to be a champion in both BKFC and the UFC.”
While the order may be tall, Mundell feels it is definitely something within reach. His first task at hand however is defeating Hector Lombard.
“Everyone wants a knockout,” Mundell said.
“Of course I’m going to go in there and try to knock his head off. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t going to try to knock him out,” he said.
The big stage of the pay-per-view setting doesn’t seem to frighten Mundell any more than his opponent does.
“I’ve been on big stages before. It’s cool to have all the eyes on me,” Mundell said. “But it doesn’t deter me from performing either.”
Lombard comes to BKFC following a six fight losing streak in the UFC, with his last MMA bout taking place in September 2018. “Showeather” Lombard was always known to be a very muscular and physically imposing individual, a crossover from judo to MMA.
“He’s a bigger guy, but he’s not too big,” Mundell said. “I don’t feel like he’s a giant. I’m moving up to fight him, so I’ll be in better shape. I don’t have to dehydrate my body as much. I believe I will have a reach advantage as well.”
